3 Video Countdown vol.3

February 15, 2024

This week we have a couple videos that picky people might not describe as G-Funk proper, however the influence will be apparent. The other video is both an iconic track and video of the style.

All three songs are featured on the G-Funk Session playlist—along with more than three hours of other tracks in the style.

3. Freak Like Me - Adina Howard

An iconic track of the 90s that seamlessly blends G-Funk with R&B. It samples Sly & The Family Stone's Sing A Simple Song and Bootsy's Rubber Band's I'd Rather Be with You.

A documentary titled Adina Howard 20: A Story of Sexual Liberation was released on the twentieth anniversary of the song's release, focusing on the impact of the track.

I love the car scenes in this video; Adina cruising around with friends in a convertible, one of them leaning into the front and talking into a car phone because the curly cord didn't reach the rear seats.

I watched a lot of music videos in the 90s and this is the only time I've ever seen a car phone in a hip hop video.

How compatible is a curly cord with hip hop? No matter how hard you tried those things would tangle and it would always be at least 30 seconds of frustration trying to remember how to set them right.

Anyways, this is a great song for jiujitsu.

2. Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik - Outkast

A little southern hip-hop here showing some of the influence of G-Funk, IMHO.

I like this video. Everyone looks like they're having a lot of fun.

What really stands out to me is the first gen Cadillac Seville; this was GM's attempt to adjust the brand in the 70s to the growing interest in European luxury sedans and replaced the Calais. The styling here set the tone of a lot of GM's cars over the next decade, unfortunately watering down a lot of the exclusivity of the Seville.

The Seville lasted through five generations of remodels coming to an end in 2004.

This first gen car in this video is an utter classic, and would be a fun way to travel with a few friends to a tournament.

1. It Was A Good Day - Ice Cube

Rap videos in the 90s always had the best cars.

This is a fantastic song for jiujitsu.
