Our whole family, my 6-year-old, my 13-year-old, and me at 36 just started our BJJ journey here, and we’ve really been enjoying it.

The kids’ class is so much fun. There are lots of games mixed with techniques, which makes it easy for my little one to learn and stay engaged.

For my teenage son, BJJ has been amazing. He’s been coming consistently for more than 6 months, and I’ve seen so much growth in his technique and confidence. He never really liked any of the sports I tried to introduce him to before, but BJJ turned out to be his thing. Huge thanks to the coaches for making that happen.

As for me, starting BJJ as a woman with absolutely no experience was a little intimidating. But the gym and coaches have been so supportive and welcoming. They really know how to teach people who know nothing and make everyone feel comfortable. I especially like how they pay attention to the little details when teaching. It helps me understand better, feel less nervous, and actually enjoy the process.

We’re very happy to be part of this gym and excited to keep learning.

My daughter and I have trained BJJ for over 10 years. We both now train at Lolakana and love it. The instructors are great and have been teaching great technique as well as following it up by answering any questions we have. There is a great community growing there and she feels very safe and supported as she continues to learn this amazing sport. I highly recommend anyone looking to find a great place to safely train in Victoria come in to this gym, you won’t regret it.

This is hands down the best place to train. The atmosphere is completely safe and ego-free, which gave me the confidence to expand from BJJ into kickboxing and MMA. The coaches are highly experienced and break down the finest technical details, making it incredibly beginner-friendly. On top of that, they have the best price in town and offer free parking, which is rare around the city these days.

My son and I are proud members at Lolakana. We are so glad to have chosen this gym as it has an amazing kids class led by seriously great instructors.

My son started BJJ here at 4 and now at almost 6 he's been competing all over BC. The drive he has (training 5 days a week) is only accomplished by his wanting to be at the gym which bring him constant joy and challenges through hard training, fun games and friendship with all the other kids and instructors.

This has inspired me to try BJJ myself in my mid 30s and I am grateful that we have chosen such a welcoming and friendly place.

Would HIGHLY recommend as I have to all friends and family already.

Who's Behind This

Hi, I'm Nolan and this is Jessica.

Lolakana started as a music project in 2020, sharing playlists for BJJ after noticing everything else seemed to be curated by algorithm.

Lolakana Martial Arts opened in downtown Victoria BC in August 2025. We're Indigenous-owned—one of a handful of gyms in Canada, and the only one in the city.

We wanted the kind of place we'd experienced elsewhere that didn't exist here yet. Somewhere you could show up, play hard for an hour and go home without it becoming your whole identity.
